Thiruthani Murugan Temple is a Lord Murugan Temple on a hill, with 365 steps representing the 365 days. The hill is 700 feet high, and it is believed to have been built by the Pallavas between the 9th and 10th centuries C.E.
Beautiful, lush green trees surround this Temple with a pathway to the top. It is one of the six holy abodes of Lord Karthikeya. In 1917, Sri Vallimalai Swamigal began the Padi Pooja, a special ritual performed in honour of Lord Murugan. On the occasion of the new year, the temple organisers clean every step and light Diyas on each one.
History of The Temple:
Thiruthani Murugan Temple has a great mythological history, where Lord Kargthikeya married Valli after the war with Surapadman. Then, Goddess Valli asked the lord to enlighten her on the significance of the hill. He said he resides here, and devotees can find peace and bliss after worshipping for five consecutive days.
Later, as advised, Lord Rama visited the Temple after the war with Ravana to find peace of mind. In the Dwapara Yuga, Arjuna visited this Temple after the Kurukshetra war with the Kauravas. Another belief is that Lord Vishnu recovered his Chakra after praying to the lord, after Tarakasura had taken it.
