According to Krutha Yuga, King Raja Kupendra from Surya Vamsham. He had a skin disease for which there was no remedy.
Once the king went to the forest to hunt, he found Ketaki Vanam. There, he saw a stream that washed his body. Surprisingly, the skin disease was the cure. On the same night, the king had a dream in which Lord Shiva instructed him to build a temple.
The king built the temple, and the stream is Pushkarini, consisting of 8 theerthas or “Astha Theertha Amrutha Gundam.” The Pushkarini is known as Dakshina Kasi.
It is said that after creating the World, Lord Brahma visited this place for meditation. Brahma himself created the Shiva Lingam. The speciality here is that devotees offer Ketaki flowers and leaves to the Shiva Lingam, not shown to Lord Shiva.
