The city is also known as Orugallu, meaning ”one stone”. Locals believe the city was built on a single rock during the medieval era.
Spread over 19 km between Warangal & Hanmakonda, this 12th-century Fort is a popular historical attraction in Telangana. Thousands of enthusiastic tourists witness this region’s historical and architectural wonders yearly.
The main highlights of the Fort are the four decorative gates, now the official symbol of the Telangana state.
The Fort remains in ruins today, reflecting the historical splendour and architectural splendour of the Kakatiya dynasty. The ruins do not resemble any fort, as the rulers’ typical grand walls, cannons and durbar halls are missing. However, you can witness the remains of the most impregnable fortress of the medieval era.
History:
Named after the city of Warangal, this eponymous Fort gives a clear insight into the erstwhile Kakatiya dynasty that flourished between 1175 and 1324 CE.
During this era, the Deccan Plateau saw a marked trend in establishing architectural marvels such as Fort, reservoirs for irrigation and multiple temples.
The rulers emphasized the security of their territory and that every part of their construction became a masterpiece and immortalized.
Ganapatideva built this magnificent Fort, and after he died in 1262, his daughter Rudrama Devi took over the construction responsibilities and eventually the entire kingdom. However, King Prataparudra II, the second Rudradeva and the last ruler of the Kakatiya kingdom, completed the Warangal Fort.
Unfortunately, after two decades, the kingdom fell into Mughal hands, and the Sultans of Delhi took it over.
They attacked the Fort several times. In 1309, during the reign of Prataparudra II, Allauddin Khilji attacked the Fort. About 1000,000 soldiers attacked the Fort, and the battle lasted for several months. King Prataparudra II and his army defended the Fort in this fierce battle.
However, the Fort could not withstand the onslaught of the Qutub Shahi dynasty, which the Nizams of Hyderabad later occupied.
Although it has been destroyed several times, what we see today are not just ruins but the magnificence of medieval architecture that speaks of the courage of the Kakatiya rulers.
Warangal Fort Architecture:
The Warangal Fort is a masterpiece of 12th-century architecture. The Fort was built in the royal style of architecture. Before it fell into ruins, the Fort had 45 large pillars surrounded by intricate carvings. ”Gateway of Glory” was the main attraction. It has a main entrance with four elaborately carved pillars built of a single stone.
The pillars are about 30 feet high, and the carvings on the pillars are worth noting even today, though they are in ruins. These majestic gateways are known as Kirti Toranas and symbolize South Indian architecture.
